Gunib

Gunib go͞onyēp´ [key], village, SE European Russia, in Dagestan. Now a mountain resort in the North Caucasus, it was historically important as a natural fortress during the Caucasian wars of the 19th cent. The imam Shamyl , leader of the Circassian tribes, made his last stand against the Russians at Gunib, where he was captured in 1859.
