Wolverhampton wo͝ol´vərhămp˝tən [key], city and metropolitan borough (1991 pop. 263,501), W central England, in the Black Country . Wolverhampton is highly industrialized products include automobiles, hardware, rayon, tires, and chemicals. St. Peter's Church in the city dates mostly from the 13th and 15th cent. Its grammar school was established in 1512. Teacher-training institutions and a technical school are also there.
