Eastbourne

Eastbourne ēst´bôrn [key], town (1991 pop. 86,715) and district, East Sussex, SE England. Eastbourne is a popular resort and conference center with a 3-mi (4.8-km) terraced promenade along the sea front, and hosts an important grass-court tennis tournament. In addition to tourism, industries include specialized manufacturing and engineering, book distribution, and e-commerce. Educational institutions include a campus of the Univ. of Brighton. Compton Place (1726–27), seat of the Dukes of Devonshire until 1954, was turned into a school. Beachy Head is in the district.
