Pyeongchang

Pyeongchang, city (2011 est. pop. 43,000), NE South Korea, in the Taebaek Mtns. on the Pyeongchang river. Pyeongchang is the seat of Pyeongchang co., a mountainous farming region that has been developed as a major winter sports center. The 1999 Asian Winter Games were held there, and Pyeongchang hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics. Odaesan National Park and Woljeongsa, a noted 7th-century Buddhist temple, are in Pyeongchang.
