Kochi, city, Japan

Kochi kōˈchē [key], city (1990 pop. 317,069), capital of Kochi prefecture, S Shikoku, Japan. From its port, Urado, the city exports dried bonito, ornamental coral, cement, and paper. Kochi prefecture (1990 pop. 825,063), 2,743 sq mi (7,104 sq km), is a mountainous region with fertile coastal plains. Agricultural tools and machinery are produced there.
