Xichang shē´chäng´ [key], city (1994 est. pop. 504,800), SW Sichuan prov., China. A trading and transport center, the city has an economy based on agricultural products and processing there also is iron and steel manufacturing. The Xichang Satellite Launch Center is located 40 mi (65 km) NW of the city it began operations in 1984.
