Peter Chrysologus, Saint, c.380–450, bishop of Ravenna, Doctor of the Church. Ordained by Cornelius, bishop of Imola, he lived as a monk for several years before being named bishop by Pope Sixtus III in 433. A skilled orator, he was known for his concise, inspired homilies, many of which have been preserved and translated. Peter was instrumental in the condemnation of Monophysitism, later declared a heresy by the church. He is venerated by both the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. Feast: July 30.
