Longfellow, Samuel

Longfellow, Samuel, 1819–92, American clergyman and hymn writer, b. Portland, Maine; brother and biographer of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He was a Unitarian pastor in Fall River, Mass., Brooklyn, N.Y., and Germantown, Pa. Among the four hymnals he compiled are Vespers (1859), containing his own Now on Land and Sea Descending, and Hymns of the Spirit (1864).
