Krzyzewski, Mike

Krzyzewski, Mike (Michael William Krzyzewski) shəshĕvˈskē [key], 1947–, American basketball coach, b. Chicago. He attended West Point (grad. 1969), where he played basketball under Bobby Knight. After serving in the U.S. army (1969–74), he became an assistant with Knight at Indiana Univ., then returned (1975) to West Point as head coach. In 1980 he moved to Duke Univ., where “Coach K” has led the Blue Devils to five national championships (1991–92, 2001, 2010, 2015), 12 Atlantic Coast Conference season championships, and 13 ACC tournament championships. In 2011 he surpassed Knight's NCAA record of 902 victories; he passed the 1,000-win milestone in 2015. He also coached the gold-medal 2008 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team, and was inducted into the basketball hall of fame in 2001.
