Deschappelles, Alexandre

Deschappelles, Alexandre (Alexandre Louis Honoré Lebreton Deschapelles), 1780–1847, French chess player, b. Ville d'Avray. Considered the world champion chess player from about 1815 to 1821, he was famous for the stakes games he played at the Café de la Regence in Paris. His most celebrated matches were victories scored in 1821 against John Cochrane, and he was the teacher of Louis de la Bourdonnais, who succeeded him as chess champion. Deschapelles, who had a remarkable aptitude for all manner of games, was also a champion whist player.
