Detaille, Jean Baptiste Édouard

Detaille, Jean Baptiste Édouard zhäN bäptēstˈ ādwärˈ dətäyˈ [key], 1848–1912, French painter. He studied under J. L. E. Meissonier and served in the Franco-Russian war. From this background he became famous for his paintings of battle scenes, portraits of soldiers, and his overall depiction of military life. His style was notable for its precision and realistic detail. One of his best-known works is Edward VII and the Duke of Connaught.
