Tumulty, Joseph Patrick

Tumulty, Joseph Patrick, 1879–1954, American politician, b. Jersey City, N.J. After his admission to the bar, he practiced law in Jersey City (1902–8) and served in the New Jersey assembly (1907–10). Tumulty supported Woodrow Wilson for the governorship of New Jersey in 1910 and spent the remainder of his public life as secretary to Wilson during the latter's gubernatorial (1911–13) and presidential (1913–21) careers. Initially Wilson relied heavily on him in matters of politics and patronage. Tumulty was the author of Woodrow Wilson as I Knew Him (1921).
