Marape, James

Marape, James, 1971–, Papua New Guinea political leader. First elected to parliament in 2007 as a member of the National Alliance party, he served as education minister (2008–11) under Prime Minister Michael Somare. Reelected in 2012 as a member of the People's National Congress (PNC), Marape served as finance minister (2012–19) under Prime Minister Peter O'Neill. In 2019 Marape resigned from the cabinet and then from the PNC, joined the Pangu party, and following O'Neill's resignation, became prime minister.
