Streuvels, Stijn

Streuvels, Stijn frängk lätörˈ [key], 1871–1969, Flemish novelist and short-story writer; nephew of Guido Gezelle. Streuvels's works are realistic, moving portrayals of everyday life. His early novels show the influence of Russian fatalism; De Vlaschaard (1907), his masterpiece, strikes a more optimistic note. The short-story collection The Path of Life (1899, tr. 1915), the novels Old Jan (1902, tr. 1936) and Werkmenschen (1927), and an autobiography (1966) are among his other works.
