Auriemma, Geno

Auriemma, Geno (Luigi Auriemma), 1954–, American basketball coach, b. Montella, Italy, grad. West Chester State College (now West Chester Univ. of Pennsylvania), 1977. After coaching as an assistant for high school and college basketball teams, he became head coach of the Univ. of Connecticut Huskies women's team in 1985. He has led the Huskies to 11 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I championships and six undefeated seasons. He was the first women's basketball coach to lead a team to nine consecutive Final Four appearances, has been named Naismith Coach of the Year seven times, and coached the Huskies to a Division I record 111 consecutive wins (2014–17). Auriemma, who became a U.S. citizen in 1994, has been head coach of the USA Women's National team since 2010.
