Ribičič, Mitja

Ribičič, Mitja mēˈtyä rĭbĭchĭˈch [key], 1919–2013, Yugoslav politician. A Slovenian, he participated in the revolutionary student movement and joined the Communist party in 1941. He was a member of the partisans of Josip Broz Tito in World War II. After the war he served as a member of the executive council of Slovenia, as a deputy of the Slovenian parliament (1951–63), and as a deputy of the federal parliament (1963–67, 1969). Ribičić then served as president (1969–71) of the federal executive council, a position equivalent to that of premier, and as president (1982–83) of the Yugoslav Communist party.
