Butkevičius, Algirdas

Butkevičius, Algirdas, 1958–, Lithuanian politician. An economist by education, Butkevičius joined the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (SDPL) in 1992, was deputy chairman of the party from 1999 to 2005, and has led the SDPL since 2009. He has served in various local political offices and was first elected to the Seimas (Lithuanian parliament) in 1996. He served as minister of finance (2004–5) and minister of transport and communications (2006–8) and was leader of the opposition in the Seimas from 2010 to 2012). After the SDPL won a plurality in the 2012 elections, Butkevičius became prime minister of a coalition government.
