Ituzaingó, battle of

Ituzaingó, battle of ēˌto͞osīn-gōˈ [key], fought in S Uruguay, Feb. 20, 1827. A combined Argentine-Uruguayan force under Carlos María de Alvear decisively defeated Brazil. The United Provinces of La Plata (Argentina) and Brazil had both claimed Uruguay. In the peace treaty that followed (1828), an independent Uruguay was created as a buffer state.
