Nyusi, Filipe Jacinto

Nyusi, Filipe Jacinto, 1959–, Mozambican political leader. An engineer by training, he worked as a manager for Mozambique's ports and railways authority before entering politics as a member of Frelimo. He was appointed defense minister (2008–14) and elected to the party's central committee in 2012. In 2014 Nyusi was elected president of Mozambique, succeeding Armando Guebuza, and in 2015 he became president of Frelimo. He was reelected president of Mozambique in 2019, in voting marred by irregularities.
