God Save the King

God Save the King (or Queen), the English national anthem. The words and music are both of doubtful origin. The air, possibly derived from a folk tune, has been attributed to Henry Carey (whose claim to authorship seems the strongest), Lully, and John Bull; it is used in America, and in the Danish hymn Heil Dir, dem libendem.

See R. Clark, Account of the National Anthem (1822), and W. H. Cummings, God Save the King (1902).
