Nelsons, Andris

Nelsons, Andris, 1978–, Latvian conductor. He studied piano and trumpet, and was a trumpeter with the Latvian National Opera as a teenager. After studying conducting in St. Petersburg, Russia, he made his conducting debut with the Latvian National Opera at 21, and later was its principal conductor (2003–7). Nelsons subsequently has been music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in England (2008–15), of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (2014–), and of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (2018–).
