  1. a former country in E Africa: formed the larger part of German East Africa; British trusteeship 1946–61; became independent 1961; now the mainland part of Tanzania. 361,800 sq. mi. (937,062 sq. km).
  2. a lake in central Africa, between Zaire and Tanzania: the longest freshwater lake in the world. ab. 450 mi. (725 km) long; 30–40 mi. (48–64 km) wide; 12,700 sq. mi. (32,893 sq. km).
