Brewer's: Lieutenant

(pronounce lef-ten'-unt) is the Latin locum-tenens, through the French. A Lieutenant-Colonel is the Colonel's deputy. The Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland is a viceroy who represents the crown in that country.
