Deforestation in Amazon Worsens

Brazilian Amazon

On December 2, CNN reported that the deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon reached its highest point in 12 years. Over 6,890 square miles have been destroyed this year, which is a 9.5% increase from last year. Environmentalists have criticized the continuous deforestation. (CNN)

Avalanches a Danger in Colorado

On December 23, officials reported that at least three skiers lost their lives to avalanches in Durango, Colorado. There have been over 220 reports of avalanches in Colorado since December 15. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has reported that this is a very unusual year, with more avalanches than usual. (CNN)

Blizzards and Avalanches in Iran

Iran Blizzard

On December 26, blizzards and avalanches in the mountains in Northern Tehran killed at least 10 climbers. Twenty teams have been sent on rescue missions, bringing back at least 14 climbers. Seven climbers are still missing. Just the day before, at least 100 people were stranded after a cable car broke down. (BBC)

Earthquake Strikes Croatia

Croatia Earthquake

On December 28, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Croatia, killing at least 7 people. Emergency crews, aided by the military, continue to search through rubble as central areas remain without power. (CNN)
