On Sept. 21, 2016, a power plant in Salinas, Puerto Rico has a fire that causes power outages across a majority of the island. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. More than 3.5 million people are without electricity through the night, suffering without air conditioning in the tropical heat. Schools and businesses are closed, and traffic is chaotic. Smaller power outages are common in Puerto Rico, which is known for having an outdated energy infrastructure. Officials say it could be up to 24 hours before power is restored.
