- On Oct. 20, 2016, the president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, announces his "separation" from the United States?politically, economically, and militarily. Duterte makes the announcement in a speech in Beijing to over 200 Chinese and Philippine businesspeople, as well as the Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli. The president plans to sign $13.5 billion in deals while he is in China.
