On Nov. 25, 2016, Fidel Castro dies at the age of 90. Castro was the revolutionary communist leader of Cuba for almost five decades, railing against the evils of imperialism. In 1959 Castro led the overthrow of the previous dictator Fulgencio Batista. CBS News analyst Pamela Falk calls Castro “a defiant demagogue, a dictator, a charismatic leader and, for decades, a Soviet puppet, all rolled into one.” During his time in power he helped lower illiteracy rates, infant mortality rates, and started a national healthcare system. However, he failed to bring prosperity and had no tolerance for dissent, jailing thousands. The impact of Castro's death on Cuba's future is unknown; current president Raul Castro—Fidel’s brother—is set to retire in 2018.
