On July 21, 2016, Fox News announces that chief executive and chairman Roger Ailes will be stepping down and that Rupert Murdoch will be taking his place. This decision comes 15 days after Gretchen Carlson made public accusations and filed a lawsuit against Ailes for sexual harassment. Ailes walks away from Fox News with a $40 million settlement and with the agreement that he will not start another news organization. Ailes is also barred from the Fox News building after it is discovered by 21st Century Fox, the parent company, that he was trying to convince his on-air coworkers to criticize anyone who cooperated with the internal sexual harassment investigation.
