Widely popular in the 19th century but neglected later, this comic retelling of the classic rags-to-riches fairytale has recently returned to favor. Cenerentola is the poor stepsister Cinderella, who is at the mercy of Don Magnifico and his two unpleasant daughters, Clorinda and Thisbe. When Prince Ramiro, disguised as the valet Dandini, calls on his way to the ball, he and Cinderella fall instantly in love. Costumed as a mysterious lady, Cinderella slips out to the ball, where the prince finds her and again declares his love. But Cinderella disappears, leaving the prince with one of her bracelets, telling him he must find her. Later, when the prince visits Don Magnifico, he recognizes a matching bracelet on Cinderella's arm, and the truth is revealed.
