Williams and Crystal on the same bill in a Reitman comedy? A surefire hit, right? Not exactly. Williams's neurotic failed writer, Dale, and Crystal's straight-man attorney, Jack, make a giddy comic team, but Reitman fails to capitalize on some of the funniest lines. When her son, Scott (Hoffheimer), runs away to chase a girl, Colette (Kinski) tells Jack that Scott is his son and begs him to find the boy. Jack is reluctant, so she uses the same approach on Dale. This is just the news Dale needs to lift him from a suicidal depression. Dale is off and running, and Jack, having a change of heart, is too. Predictably, the two meet on the road and go it together.
