Much has been made of Eddie Murphy's transformation from raw '80s comedian to 21st century father figure. People's surprise suggests they're unaware that Murphy's livewire persona from two decades ago is the same as it is in Dr. Dolittle 2: just an act. A very good one, of course, and one only a gifted actor could pull off with such lasting success.

Murphy returns as Dolittle—the doctor who can communicate with animals. This sequel sneaks in some good liberal consciousness: he must convince a pampered circus bear to mate with a wild one and thus prevent loggers from destroying the Californian forest. By the end of the movie, animals have organized and are planning a strike.

The main difference between this Dolittle and the last is the level of CGI animation. It's been ratcheted up several notches in realism. If the omnipresent poop jokes aren't enough for the kids, then the curiosity of watching critters chat with expressive facial gestures should do the trick.
