The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle opens as a cartoon. It sketches the hard times that have landed on Rocky (original voice June Foray) and Bullwinkle (Keith Scott). Things then switch to live action, with Rene Russo camping up the role of Natasha. The squirrel and moose remain awkwardly animated beings, much like Robert DeNiro in this regard. DeNiro plays Fearless Leader, a malicious cartoon-turned-human who seeks world domination via the “Really Bad Television” network. When satirizing his role as Travis Bickle, it almost appears as if DeNiro is out to destroy his own cinematic high-standing.

A large gap lies between a simple 1960s cartoon and a large Hollywood production combining live action plus 3-D computer animation. Although both may be called The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, one harkens back to cheesy reruns and the other reminds everyone that Who Framed Roger Rabbit was much better at this.
