Schildkraut, Rudolph

Schildkraut, Rudolph shĭltˈkrout [key], 1862–1930, Austrian actor. He was a member of Max Reinhardt's Deutsches Theater, Berlin. In 1911 he came to the United States and until 1922 was a star of the Yiddish Art Theater in New York City. His son, Joseph Schildkraut, 1896–1964, first achieved fame in a Theatre Guild production of Liliom (1921). He appeared in many motion pictures after 1921. His performance as the father in The Diary of Anne Frank (1955) was outstanding.
