was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Peru after being found guilty in June by a civilian court of “terrorist collaboration” in a 1995 attempt by a Marxist terrorist group to take over the Peruvian Congress. The former New Yorker was first convicted in 1996 by a secret military court and sentenced to life in prison. The military trial was widely condemned as unfair, as her attorneys were not allowed to cross-examine witnesses and the judges presiding over the case were shrouded in hoods. A military tribunal ordered in 2000 that she be retried by a civilian court.
