Robert Pleasant TRIPPE, Congress, GA (1819-1900)

TRIPPE Robert Pleasant , a Representative from Georgia; born near Monticello, Jasper County, Ga., December 21, 1819; moved with his father to Monroe County and settled near Culloden; attended Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, Va., and was graduated from Franklin College (later the University of Georgia) at Athens in 1839; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced practice in Forsyth, Ga.; member of the State house of representatives 1849-1852; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1852 to the Thirty-third Congress; elected as a candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1859); was not a candidate for renomination in 1858 having become a candidate for State senator; served in the State senate in 1859 and 1860; Member of the First Confederate Congress; served in the Confederate Army 1862-1865; resumed the practice of law in Forsyth, Ga.; associate judge of the State supreme court from 1873 until 1875, when he resigned; again resumed the practice of law in Atlanta, Ga., and died there July 22, 1900; interment in Forsyth Cemetery, Forsyth, Ga.
