John Edward BOULIGNY, Congress, LA (1824-1864)

BOULIGNY John Edward , a Representative from Louisiana; born in New Orleans, La., February 5, 1824; attended the public schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in New Orleans; held several local offices; elected as the candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1859-March 3, 1861); was strongly opposed to secession and was the only Louisiana Member to retain his seat after the State seceded on January 26, 1861; retired to private life and remained in the North during the Civil War; died in Washington, D.C., February 20, 1864; interment in the Congressional Cemetery.
