James MERIWETHER, Congress, GA (1789-1854)

MERIWETHER James , a Representative from Georgia; born near Washington, Wilkes County, Ga., in 1789; attended the common schools; was graduated from the University of Georgia at Athens in 1807; instructor in the university for a year; studied law; was admitted to the bar and practiced for a short period, later engaging in agricultural pursuits; served under General Floyd in the war against the Creek Indians in 1813; United States commissioner to the Cherokee Indians; trustee of the University of Georgia 1816-1831; member of the state house of representatives 1821-1823; elected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth Congress (March 4, 1825-March 3, 1827); was not a candidate for renomination in 1826; resumed agricultural pursuits; died while on a trip to the West, near Memphis, Tenn., in 1854; interment in the family burying ground on the plantation in Clarke County, near Athens, Ga.
