Hall of Fame boxer and former light heavyweight champion who outlasted Sugar Ray Robinson in a sweltering title fight at Yankee Stadium in 1952; real name was Giuseppe Antonio Berardinelli; won 175-pound world title in 1950 (Freddie Mills); lost heavyweight title fight in 1951 (Ezzard Charles); his defeat of Robinson in the 14th round in over 100-degree heat marked the only time Robinson did not answer the bell in 201 career bouts; lost his title in 1952 (Archie Moore); retired in 1958 with a record of 82-29-4 and 21 KOs. He suffered a stroke in February. The cause of his death was not given.
