heavyweight boxer who overcame serious injuries to become a top contender in the 1960s; lost in the third round to Muhammad Ali in 1966; a state trooper shot him after the two started fighting during a traffic stop, leaving Williams with lifelong kidney problems; inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997. He died of injuries he suffered in an auto-pedestrian accident.Died: Houston, September 10, 1999
