ABC took a big chance with Wonderland, a disturbing yet brilliant hospital drama, and backed off after only two episodes. Viewership fell off from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and the network abruptly canceled the show, despite critical praise. Series creator Peter Berg expressed outrage that the network never gave the show a chance to find an audience. Set in the psychiatric and emergency units of the fictional Rivervue Hospital, which has been closely modeled on New York's Bellevue Hospital, the medical drama focuses on the complexity of psychiatric medicine. Berg, of Chicago Hope and Very Bad Things, crafted a dynamic, tightly written show that takes a realistic look at mental illness, avoiding over-the-top, cartoonish caricatures.
