Based on the novel by Jane Smiley

Although Smiley won a Pulitzer prize for her version of Shakespeare's King Lear, the filmmakers of A Thousand Acres shouldn't expect an Oscar for their effort. This Midwestern King Lear wannabe follows the story of Larry Cook (Robards), who decides to retire and divide his farm between his three daughters (Lange, Pfeiffer and Leigh). With subplots dealing with everything from incest to environmental poisoning, this film is more soap opera than anything else, and not a very good one at that. If you want to see a masterful film adaptation of King Lear, rent Akira Kurosawa's Ran.
