Rutherford's film career began in her middle years, and she soon built a reputation for playing the brainy spinster and the dotty British eccentric. Perhaps best known as the medium Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit (1946) and as the formidable Miss Jane Marple in the films Murder, She Said (1961), Murder at the Gallop (1963), Murder Most Foul (1964), and Murder Ahoy (1964), Rutherford also won an Oscar for her role in The VIPs (1963).
