This overlooked film opens deep in the heart of Texas with the legend of a border-town sheriff (hunk du jour McConaughey). Years later, his son (Cooper) delves into the unsolved murder of a coldbloodedly corrupt lawman (Kristofferson) to figure out his father's role in the mystery. Director Sayles deftly employs a naturalistic style to create a genuinely haunting, superbly acted slice of life. Keep your rewind button nearby — the plot is as twisty as the Rio Grande.
