Last Night

Director/Writer:Don McKellar
Lions Gate Films; R; 93 minutes
Cast:Don McKellar, Sandra Oh, Callum Keith Rennie

It is the final night on earth. Humanity's first unmovable deadline will also be its last. An unnamed catastrophe ends everything at midnight. Now, what do you do with a few hours to kill? Actor-writer Don McKellar contemplates some possible answers to this question in his excellent directorial debut Last Night.

Sandra (Sandra Oh) has gone grocery shopping for the ultimate meal with her husband (director David Cronenberg), who has spent the entire day ensuring his customers that their gas service will last them through the apocalypse. Downtown rioters derail Sandra's mission, crossing her path with Patrick (McKellar), a lonely man who'd wanted to end it all. For its hefty subject matter, the film is surprisingly low-key. No huge explosions or brave heroes averting disaster, just a group of Toronto residents whose actions present possibilities and raise a stirring question.
