Some people don't like live records. Some people don't like best-of collections. Well, this is one live, best-of collection that's terrific. Recorded in Nashville at the Douglas Corner Cafe, Keepers is essential Guy Clark: tough and spare (“She Ain't Goin' Nowhere”), but carefully sentimental (“Let Him Roll”). Clark rarely tours with a band, but on this set he's backed up by a superb group of musicians that includes his son Travis on bass. The support leaves Clark free to concentrate on his gruff but deeply expressive vocals. “Heartbroke,” “L.A. Freeway” and “Desperados Waiting for a Train” receive particular care. Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill and Jerry Jeff Walker have all recorded Clark's songs, but there's nothing better than the original.
