At the age of 28, self-made folk-punk priestess Ani DiFranco is pushing harder than ever, with a steady flow of new albums. Yet the speed with which she's producing may be starting to take its toll. On her latest release, DiFranco delivers several wondrous tracks, most notably the breathtaking “Come Away From It,” a long but mesmerizing plea to a friend who's drowning in drugs. Of equal merit is “Everest,” a slow-building saga about breaking down racial barriers. While those songs are superb, there are other times when DiFranco seems to be simply playing around with words as if eternally seeking bumper-sticker catch phrases. Too many cuts fail to deliver. This isn't her best album, but there are still enough bright moments to satisfy her hardcore fans.
