Someone needs to tell the bigwigs at Disney a little secret: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There was nothing wrong with the animated 101 Dalmatians, and it certainly didn't need updating. The hounds talked, for crying out loud. In the live-action update, the dogs look cute and cuddly, but that gets old quickly, and their vocabulary is limited to “bow wow.” Close's villainess Cruella De Vil is irresistibly wicked, from her ruby red lips down to her matching manicured nails. Cruella, a fashion designer, wants a coat made out of dalmatian pelts and spends the film chasing her dream. The spotted pups prevail, leaving Cruella and her thugs punched, electrocuted and swimming in a vat of molasses. But in the end, the film is simply another marketing opportunity for Disney.
