Postal Workers Bitten by Dogs
2001–2006

The U.S. Postal Service reported that 3,184 postal workers were victims of dog bites in fiscal year 2006. Dog bites to postal employees peaked during the mid-1980s when more than 7,000 letter carriers were attacked annually. Through aggressive employee training and public education programs that statistic has dropped by more than two-thirds. In 2006, Orange Country—Long Beach California area postal workers suffered the most bites, with 96. They were followed by Houston with 94, Sacramento with 82, and Los Angeles with 77.
