Beauty and the Beast (1991)
The first—and only—animated feature nominated for a Best Picture Oscar captures the dazzling details of the original French fairy tale. Here, the bookish Belle and the Beast fall in love while the Beast holds the beauty captive in his deserted castle. The film has a decidedly Broadway feel, and stage veterans Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach lend their voices to the endearingly theatrical teapot, Mrs. Potts, and candlestick, Lumiere. Beauty remains one of Disney's most beloved animated films and its soundtrack one of the most splendid in film history.
