The Asian economic crisis multiplied, spreading into Russia. India and Pakistan engaged in nuclear brinkmanship, and Indonesia's Suharto toppled. Although Middle East negotiations inched forward, then faltered, in Northern Ireland peace became tangible after decades of violence.





Did you know?  The first newspaper published daily in the U.S. was the Pennsylvania Packet and General Advertiser in Philadelphia in Sept. 1784.
